Do you want to break into the field of forensic science and lead the life of a much needed and highly educated forensic scientist? If so, you’ll have a lot of company because this is a rapidly expanding field that is definitely in demand. There are many different fields to go into, so if this is your goal, you have a lot of different options ahead of you.

Tips For Those Going Into Forensic Science

• Decide what you would like to major in such as chemistry, biology, etc.
• Select a school that has a forensic science program
• Get as much education and experience that you can
• Don’t be afraid to try and consider new opportunities related to your career choice
• Meet with your advisor and create a plan for your education
• Create a timeline for your education and career
• Stay educated about cutting edge technology
• Apply for an accept internships that will give you hands on experience
• Plan to get at least a bachelor’s degree
• Be willing to take a low paying job when you’re done with school
• Remember that what you see on television is not always accurate
• Take your time, pace yourself

Many people have fallen prey to the CSI effect, which is the term that is used to describe people who believe that everything in forensic science is quick, simple, and easy. This is so far from the truth and the CSI effect often leads people who are just going into this field to become disenchanted and give up on their plans and their goals before they ever really get started.

When you are going into this field you need to realize that you will be learning many things. You’ll be learning not only behind the science in your major, but you may also be learning about using equipment, evidence collection, making reports, being an expert witness, dealing with law enforcement, and so much more.

There really is a lot to learn, and taking in this much takes time. You need to simply create a realistic plan with your advisor and then stick to it. You also need to realize that you probably will not come out of school making a ton of money.

Instead of focusing on how much money you’re making, focus on getting your foot in the door and getting some real life experience. When you have experience it is easier to demand a higher paying salary.
