How to be a Forensic Scientist
When you turn on the television it seems as though everyone is a forensic scientist. If this is something that appeals to you, why not go for it? You can take what you see on the television that interests you and translate it into real life.
Sure, it will take time and work to get the education needed and the job will be challenging, but isn’t any good job worth the effort?
The Education Needed
As you can probably guess, a forensic scientist needs to have a specialized education to be appointed to such a position. In most settings, a forensic scientist needs to acquire at least a bachelor’s degree in forensic science.
In some settings it may be plausible for the individual to have a bachelors degree in chemistry, biology, physical, or even physical anthropology. There are more and more universities and community colleges offering forensic science programs, making this an option for more people.
Whatever degree you decide to pursue, you will need to have an education that is rich in biology, physics, chemistry, and pharmacology. It can also be helpful to gain some experience in quantative analysis and statistics. You should also get some experience in using analytical instruments as well as blood sampling and computer courses.
Contrary to popular opinion you don’t have to specialize at the undergraduate level. The more generalized you keep things the more flexible you will, which means you’ll get more experience in many areas, appealing to more potential employees in the future.
While you will likely need a bachelor’s degree to hold a job as a forensic scientist, you can continue on with your education. You may find that there is a subfield of forensic science that appeals to you more than the others.
This is a good thing to specialize in, because if you have an interest in a niche it may be a job that you enjoy for a prolonged period of time.
Career Planning
When you are getting your education you may want to plan for your career.
Where would you like to work?
What aspect of forensic science would you like to work in most?
When you start to plan these things about your future career you can often tailor your education so you have the best chance of getting the job that you most want.
It will also allow you to determine if you can stop at a bachelor’s degree or if you need to continue on and get a Masters degree or even a doctorate. If you are uncertain of your path, be sure to meet with your advisor who can help guide you a bit.
